Zoom Animation - a little about us

We're committed to making good quality animation, from our base in the hills in Marsden, West Yorkshire.
We have the best of both worlds with great countryside on our doorstep and easy access to the cities of Manchester, Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield. We're well linked in to technology and business support locally and regionally, and are looking for new ideas and partnerships to make animation which looks great, moves well and meets the needs of commissioners and audiences.

Zane Whittingham

Is a character animator with 20 years' experience.

He's worked across TV, film and computer games, working freelance in London animation studios and latterly working for 3 computer games companies in Leeds and Manchester.

After years of working on other people's stuff, he's taking time to develop his own voice in animation. He's passionate that making animation needn't be expensive and can be made from anywhere in the world, so why not make it in a place that you love?

He's been busily working on a range of projects on his own and in collaboration with others. He's also started to gather together all that he has learnt ready to share with the world and is now delivering lectures about the principles and processes of animation to a variety of groups.

He graduated from Humberside University back in 1990 from a graphic design course specialising in animation. He's learnt from some of the best people in the business throughout his career working in animation studios, starting off as an assistant animator, working his way up.

He put down his pencil a while back and ventured into the world of computers and has used 3D Studio Max, Character Studio, Motion Capture, Human IK, Photoshop, Lightwave and has tried a bit of Maya. However, 2D is still his first love and recently most of his animation has combined his hand drawn techniques with using Adobe Flash.

Its taken him a lot of work and experimentation to achieve the kind of look he's been seeking, so he's supported this work with a range of education projects with groups across the North. Its given him the chance to hone his communication skills, and he's made around 20 films with groups in recent years. He's gradually doing less of this as his commercial animation work is beginning to take off.
Some samples of his work are on his blog zanewhittingham.blogspot.com/

Kath Shackleton

Has a background in community arts and as a local government arts officer, and is developing the skills to become an animation producer. She's given advice, funding and business support to artists and arts organisations over the past 14 years and managed and evaluated a diverse range of projects. She's listened to animators' trials and tribulations over many years, and wondered if she could put her skills to good use helping to develop the animation industry in Yorkshire.

After getting a research grant from Screen Yorkshire and the National Media Museum in 2007, Kath set off to find out who was doing what in animation regionally. She came across a wonderful group of people who wanted to meet up and work collaboratively. The organisation Animated Yorkshire (also known as Ay Up!) was born. We've met up regularly, screened work, listened to industry speakers, organised training events, run projects and had some good fun along the way! They are a talented bunch with huge potential. We've got everyone from script writers, to sound people, to voice artists and musicians involved as well as 2D, 3D and stop motion animators. Kath has been really proud of the achievements, a couple of our animators ran a really successful Animation Lab in the National Media Museum and she particularly enjoyed producing and recording sound for "Sounds Like Bradford", a sampler of animators' skills.

Kath has developed skills in animation working in education, working with young people to make animation. Working with Zane she's organised and managed all of the processes in making animation creatively, interpreting diverse themes with a wide range of clients, delivered within tight deadlines. She's learnt quickly to work to schedules, various animation techniques, sound recording, editing and a lot of technical skills.

Kath has now realised the potential of developing this work with professional animators, and is looking to develop employment and creative opportunities for animators in Yorkshire. She also enjoys thinking strategically, and would like to work with the key players in animation to help to keep animation talent in the region, to develop new ways to fund animation and to make new places to screen and show work.
